Wisconsin -- Postcrescent.com recently had an inspirational piece about young Scott Schultz who suffers from Asberger's Syndrome (a form of autism).
Scott took up karate at a church in New London when he was 10.
His physical abilities began to improve after a couple of years of hard work - eventually becoming one of the best students. Finally, after 5 years of training, Scott recently was awarded his black belt.

Therapeutic Martial Arts
Ohio -- Michelle Martin says therapeutic martial arts is working for many of her students.
The school psychologist is also an instructor at Insight Learning and Wellness Center in Cleveland. She teaches Tae Kwon Do to students who have ADHD, autism, Asperger's Syndrome and she has seen improvement in their focus and social skills.
She says the martial arts teach self control and concentration. She teaches children 6 to 18 years old. It is a combination of group therapy and martial arts.

Courage
Earning a black belt in tae kwon do takes dedication, commitment and discipline for any child, but for two autistic SouthCoast boys, it also took courage.
Ian Mayo and Collin O'Brien have been studying at Kwon's U.S. Tae Kwon Do Center in North Dartmouth for four years. Both boys earned their black belts on Jan. 27. Both boys are autistic.
Ten-year-old Ian has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. As a result, he has limited social skills and sensory problems. Those limitations made Pam and Robert Mayo of Dartmouth nervous about putting their son into tae kwon do. "What if he doesn't behave? What if he doesn't listen? What if he runs around? That's all I could think of," said Mrs. Mayo.
Ian surprised everyone, not only with his enthusiasm and performance in class, but with how much he has grown through the program.

Asberger Syndrome
UK -- Teenage black belt Ethan Ward should be an inspiration to all parents with autistic children - according to his karate instructor.
The 15-year-old, who has Asperger Syndrome, successfully completed his black belt grading in Karate last week.
And his sensei John Robertson has been so impressed with the Ethan’s determination to succeed that he recently awarded the Bridgehall teenager the club's Outstanding Achievement Award.
