Jiu-Jitsu Instructor Saves Officer

Stories like this make me all warm and fuzzy - great going Mr Arrigoni, great going in deed!

California -- When a seemingly crazed fare evader began pummeling a San Francisco police officer, it was probably more than just a bit fortunate the attack happened outside a martial arts academy.

A 24-year-old jiu-jitsu instructor named Pedro Arrigoni came to the officer's rescue, controlling the attacker with a choke hold and forcing him into submission, according to sfexaminer.com.

Police said the 23-year-old suspect assaulted the officer while trying to avoid a fare evasion citation.

Here's a video of the situation - low quality unfortunately - and beware of some rather strong choice of words...

School Judo Deaths

Japan -- When a 15-year-old boy skipped judo practice, the boy's teacher was furious and stood waiting for him at the gates of his junior high school in Yokohama, according to the boy's parents.

The teacher, a former All Japan judo champion then reportedly forced the boy into the gym and made him grapple one on one. The judo teacher allegedly then choked the boy until he lost consciousness.

When the boy came to, the teacher once again choked the boy until he went limp. The teenager was thrown to the floor with such force that he suffered a severe brain injury - acute subdural hematoma.

The above is one of the cases referred to in this article from search.japantimes.co.jp, titled "108 school judo class deaths but no charges, only silence".

Guilty Judo Killer

California -- January 5, I wrote a post about a judo black belt -- a former student of renowned and respected judo teacher "Will" Cahill -- accused of killing his wife.

August 29, the man admitted in court to the murder, according to findarticles.com. He claimed he killed his wife following an argument, using what the software engineer called a Judo technique. He said that he kept her corpse in his car for two nights while he dug a makeshift grave in the Oakland hills.

He allegedly confessed on August 21 to use "the most unsophisticated choke hold that any judo instructor would completely despise you for ever using,"

He was convicted by a jury on April 28 of first-degree murder in the killing. His wife had last been seen alive September 3, 2006, when she dropped off the couple's two children at the man's home.

The 44-year-old man led police to the grave, where the skeletal remains of his 31-year-old wife were found, on July 7.

Not an Expert?

Here we have a man who may have just a hint of a tiny, insignificant anger management problem. And since all martial arts people are the embodiment of absolute peace, human kindness and self-control (... so I am told) - this guy must have used a "karate-style" belt belonging to someone else to try and strangle his partner.
It is also quite obvious it is not his belt all the time the reporter doesn't mention anything about the man being an "expert". As we all know, anyone with a belt is a legitimate, totally deadly martial arts "expert"...

Story:
Louisiana -- Police received a call from a 27-year-old woman who claimed a 45-year-old man had beat her and kept her prisoner in his house, according to a slidellsentry.com report.

The Alabama woman told police she and the man had been dating since January 8 after meeting on the Internet. She had come to Slidell to spend the weekend with the man.

During her visit, the man and the woman allegedly began arguing over their relationship. The woman said he made threats to her if she did not change her ways. The woman felt ill and wanted to stop the argument, but the man reportedly continued, and the argument escalated.

The man allegedly took away the woman's purse that contained her keys and cellular phone and locked them in another room in the house. The woman told police she then went to the bedroom, sat down on the bed and started to cry.

The man came into the bedroom, she said, and allegedly hit her on the back of the head so hard that she momentarily lost consciousness.

When she recovered, she said the man was very angry, and his verbal threats became dangerous. While he was holding a knife on her, he allegedly threatened to kill the woman's entire family before he killed her.

Then the attacker allegedly used a karate-style belt to choke the woman.

Fast Quiet Deadly

Ah, yes - the über deadly judo. Not as lethal as the numbchucks or the ninja - but still...

Story:

"There are a lot of different chokes," the prosecutor said, as he explained the art of judo. "It's fast. It's quiet. It's deadly."

Karate Catch

New Jersey -- When the thief eyed a pickup truck parked outside a West Deptford Township home early Friday morning, he didn't know that its owner was a karate instructor with 12 years of experience under his black belt. He found out soon enough, nj.com reports.

The 33-year-old owner woke up shortly before 4 a.m. Friday when he heard a noise outside his bedroom window, his wife said. Heading outside to investigate the noise, the owner must have spooked the thief.

The suspect ran, the wife said, and her husband who teaches martial arts in Woodbury sprinted after him, grabbing the man and putting him in a chokehold.

Police arrived to find the karate teacher wearing only a pair of gray sweatpants sitting on the suspect's back and twisting his arm, pinning the man to the ground by holding one arm behind his back.

Friends Fighting

Who could possibly need enemies with friends like this...

Story:
Pennsylvania -- Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, North Sewickley Township police were called to a high school parking lot for a reported stabbing, and found two young men in a field adjacent to the school, according to timesonline.com.

Police said a 19-year-old male was bleeding from stab wounds, and about 70 yards away, the other man, 20, was lying on the ground with cuts on his head and left thumb.

Police said the two, who had been friends, were arguing about a girl and the dispute turned physical. Police said a maintenance man who saw the fight broke it up and left. But the men fought again, he said.

The younger man, who police said has been trained in the Army in mixed martial arts and ground combat fighting, knocked the other to the ground and began punching and kneeing him, in addition to choking him, police said.

The 20-year-old was on the ground when he pulled a fold-out pocket knife from his pants and stabbed the other in both legs, police said.

Killed by Trainer

UK -- A fitness trainer used a hold he learned from an martial arts instruction video to throttle a disabled man and then tried to pin the blame on his best friend, a court heard.

The 34-year-old Sidcup man is on trial for the murder of Kevin Beckingham at his home in Plumstead, on February 12 last year.

The Old Bailey heard how the accused killed Mr Beckingham, aged 35, with his own hands using a choke hold from the American martial art of catch wrestling.

In 1999, Mr Beckingham employed the accused, a father-of-one, as a personal trainer to help him "build himself up".

It is claimed the accused, who was described as "manipulative" and "aggressive", stabbed Mr Beckingham in the neck after choking him to death, to make it look like he had been killed by an intruder.

Negative Positive Tests

According to the California State Athletic Commission, a MMA fighter has tested positive for Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite. The fighter in question is Phil Baroni, who was choked out by Frank Shamrock in the main event of the Strike Force/Elite XC pay-per-view on June 22.

The event took place in San Jose, and Baroni was not the only fighter on the card to fail a drug test, as Carter Williams tested positive for cocaine.

These suspensions come on the heels of MMA legend Royce Gracie's suspension. The Brazilian tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone. He reportedly had 25 times the normal limit of Nandrolone in his body.

Officer Down Fighting

Canada -- Police departments are retraining officers to better fight on the ground after an explosion of public interest in mixed martial arts and ultimate fighting.

Those combat styles emphasize ground fighting, where combatants wrestle to establish dominant positions before pulling off brutal combinations of punches, chokes, and arm and leg holds.

The popularity of the sport led Victoria police to add specialized ground fighting techniques and defences to their use-of-force training seminar last month, said Mike Massine, the department's control tactics training co-ordinator.

Domestic dispute

No charges will be filed against the South Bend Police officer who shot and killed a man in the line of duty Monday.

Prosecutors say Patrolman Jason King did what was absolutely necessary to defend his own life and the homicide has been ruled justifiable. Officer King responded to a domestic dispute call on Monday.

When he arrived he spotted 25-year-old Joseph Hanrath in the neighborhood. Hanrath matched the description of the offender in that call. Patrolman King chased him until Hanrath turned on the policeman and attacked him. Police say Hanrath used a military or martial arts move to choke Officer King.
