The most likely candidate to become the next Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven from the Swedish Labor Party, has apparently a few martial arts tricks up his sleeve. Could definitely be nice to have if you need to grapple your opponents :-)

Mr Löfven trained jujutsu (ju-jitsu) many years ago but was sporty enough to show a few moves when he was asked about it on Swedish television recently.

Senior Karateka Taking Down Robbers

Here's 69-year-old Jan Eriksson, apparently a tough dude who's been around the block a time or two.

When faced with demands from three young robbers, armed with a baseball bat, the karate black belt holder told them in no uncertain term to forget about it.

He then proved they had messed with the wrong guy when they attacked him and he floored the three wanna-be gangsters. Great life lesson for these three useless punks!

MMA Robbery Suspect

Sweden -- A well known, 31-year-old active MMA fighter has been arrested in Sweden. The man is suspected to have participated in a recent large-scale armed heist against a cash depot in central Stockholm.

The air born robbers used a stolen helicopter and explosives during the raid on Wednesday. They broke into the building through the roof and flew off with bags of cash, according to police.

The pre-dawn heist, described as "daring" and "spectacular", is said to have stunned police in the Swedish capital. The authorities were allegedly unable to get their own helicopters off the ground because suspected explosives had been placed at their hangar outside of Stockholm.

A total of six men has so far been arrested, including a person suspected of flying the helicopter used in the robbery.

No Head Scarves

Sweden -- Eleven female Iranian athletes have not been allowed to participate in a karate competition in Kalmar, because they refused to remove their traditional Islamic head scarves.

The women athletes was to take part in the Konishi Cup competition, but ended up as spectators.

According to the rules, competitors must not wear jewellery, necklaces or any type of head gear and the judge of the karate tournament said he wouldn't make an exception in this case.

Wooden Dummies

Sweden -- Using a wooden plank as a weapon of choice, a gang jumped a martial artist in Eskilstuna. The intended victim was hit to the back of the head before he was able to retaliate.

Being trained in martial arts, he turned the table on the attackers. The first assailant was immediately struck to the ground.

Even the second attacker got a taste of the man's self-defense skills. The other gang members immediately backed off.

The victim will not be charged with assault. According to police, the man acted in self-defense.

Had no chance

Sweden -- This thursday, several persons received awards from county police chief Carin Götblad in the form of cake, diplomas and money for bravely intervening in crimes.

One of the persons being awarded was Anders Norrman from Skarpnäck.

When an elderly lady neighbour was assaulted by a burglar the 15-year old it enraged him so much that he wrestled the escaping burglar to the ground and held him in place with a leg scissors hold for the duration of 20 minutes before police arrived on the scene.

The burglar had no chance.

"I am a swedish champion in judo", Anders Norrman told media.

Interesting debate

Oh yes, we have this really ignorant debate here in Norway too..

Sweden -- On 'Nyhetsmorgon' yesterday there was an interesting debate regarding the link between people convicted of aggressive behavior and the martial experience they carry with them.

It's been a debate that's been raging on for years, but there doesn't seem to be a single shred of evidence to say that this is the case. It just seemed he was looking for someone to blame, i.e. the martial arts community.

It's interesting too that the person making such blatant accusations, didn't make one mention of excessive alcohol consumption, drug use and the use and influence of the media and the effects it has on society.
