Summer Camp Lawsuit

Oregon -- A child nearly drowned during a children's taekwondo summer camp in 2011, and now the girl's mother is suing the Tigard organizers for "negligence" she claims allowed the incident to happen, according to oregonlive.com.

The incident occurred at a Tigard high school pool August 20, 2010. The woman has named the taekwondo association, the taekwondo school leaders and the Tigard-Tualatin Aquatic District among the responsible defendants.

The mother had reportedly told told a staff member at the school her daughter was a non-swimmer. The mother was allegedly told the activities would include safe options for non-swimmers.

The complaint alleges camp organizers were responsible for the incident after "failing to keep a proper look-out" over the 6-year-old girl while she was in the water. The mother also alleges staff members weren't properly trained to watch over her daughter.

Blind Won Taekwondo Gold

Croatia -- A man who became blind after a 1998 accident took the top spot at a taekwondo competition in Zagreb, according to croatiantimes.com.

"Yeah, yeah ... big deal, so he won a sparring match", some folks may perhaps be tempted to think. Well, let me assure you it IS a big deal as it appears the 36-year-old Mirsad Becirovic was the only competitor with a disability!

If that is not impressive to you, then I seriously don't know what might be.

Car-Ate

California -- An 83-year-old man, who was pulling into his second floor parking spot at a parking garage in Glendale after a karate class, drove his car through metal guard rails and onto the pavement below - landing on its roof, according to ktla.com.

Still, the senior citizen was able to walk away from the crash with minor injuries, according to reports.

This has got to be one lucky individual. Either that, or his karate was really something else. In any case, glad he wasn't seriously hurt.

Good advertisement for the solid build of the Range Rover too - car-ate for the win :-)

But wait, here's more, from abclocal.go.com this time. Seems it may be a case of bad shoe-do...

"It appeared to me that he was driving with his shoes off, which may have contributed to the accident if his foot slipped," said a parking representative.

"(...) I understand he does karate, so maybe that's why he's not wearing his shoes today," said a police spokesman.

Bad Car Kung Fu

October 5, on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, an embarrassed actor Terrence Howard explained how he ended up injuring himself with some impromptu car-fu.

Explaining the accident he said: "I'm sitting in the car and I'm thinking about the Bruce Lee days and all of the kung-fu stuff that people used to do, and I'm trying to drive and I made a fool of myself in the process," he said according to hollywood.com and tvsquad.com.

"You know how Bruce Lee used to do that little short one-inch punch? I'm thinking I can do that in front of the rear view mirror. That one-inch punch. That mirror hit back. (...)."

So now we know - boards don't hit back (or so said Bruce), but mirrors apparently do. Good to know :-)

Wristlockido March

UK -- On Wednesday at 11:25 a.m., 30-year-old Ash Scholefield was sitting in his truck at traffic lights in Gomersal.

A van careered on to the pavement to the left of Ash's truck and crashed into a tipper lorry which was waiting at the lights. The driver of the van climbed out of the window and ran off.

Ash instinctively jumped from his own cab and chased the 16-year-old for about 1,000-meters across a school field.

Despite the teenager wearing running shoes and Ash being in his work rigger boots, he managed to catch up and tackle him. Ash knew just how to restraining the struggling youth - he is a black belt instructor in aikido.

He put the teenager in a wrist lock and marched him back to the scene of the accident and restrained him until police officers arrived 15 minutes later.

Family Keeps Vigil

Hang in there buddy.

Story:
New York -- The family of the tow truck driver who was right on top of the steam pipe that exploded in Midtown spoke about 21-year-old Gregory McCullough's progress.

His mother told the NY Times he had opened his eyes for the first time last week, "They can't tell us if he'll be OK because his injuries are too severe. He is still in a coma but the nurses said he can hear us. So I sing to him and I know he's listening. I know he can hear me."

McCullough, who also attended classes at John Jay College and studied karate when not working, suffered burns over 80% of his body, and doctors put him into a medically induced coma. It's estimated that the heat of the steam from the 83-year-old pipe was at least 400 degrees.

World heritage sites

A number of accidents have been reported at heritage sites in China in recent years. Wudang Mountain in central China's Hubei Province, declared a World Heritage site in 1994, saw its 600-year-old Yuzhengong Palace burn to ashes in 2003 in a fire caused by a careless employee of a martial arts school.

Accidental?

"Accidental martial arts punch to the throat"? I suppose the rape, murder and dismemberment were accidents too?

Story:
The Ohio Parole Board will hold another hearing to decide whether a man convicted in the 1985 killing and dismemberment of Mentor-on-the-Lake teenager Michelle Hayes should be released from prison.

And once again, the victim's family will try to stop Stephen B. Cohen from getting out of the Marion Correctional Institution any time soon. Cohen, 38, is serving eight to 25 years.

Grant told officials he killed 17-year-old Michelle with an accidental martial arts punch to the throat because she resisted his sexual advances.
