Of curse!

I think we can all safely go back to sleep - after all it's not being named "Curse of the Golden Shower" :-)

Story:
Chinese director Zhang Yimou's latest martial arts blockbuster "Curse of the Golden Flower" has been nicknamed "Curse of the Golden Corset" by the country's Internet users transfixed by the actresses' bodice-ripping gowns.

The term used for "golden flower" sounds similar to "golden corset" in Mandarin, though the Chinese characters are different.

But he was released on bail the following day.

The 46-year-old from Whitstable, who is married with two teenage children, was last seen at kick boxing training in Folkestone, on Tuesday (last week).

Kent Police believe the martial arts instructor then disappeared on his way to a gym in Crawley, West Sussex.

Courthouse attack

He couldn't have chosen a worse time to leap out of the Nelson District Court dock and attempt to stab a judge with a pen.

Within seconds, he was pinned down by two police officers, and he was soon back in court facing numerous other charges.

Two of the officers responsible for stopping the attack on May 9 - temporary constable Doug Spencer and Sergeant Wayne Johnston - were on Wednesday awarded the district commander's commendation for their actions.

Mr Spencer, who was a black belt instructor in taekwondo, trained in two other martial arts and has done cage fighting, was preparing to lead the 24-year-old man out of the courtroom after Judge Geoffrey Ellis had granted him bail.

Egyptian security forces stormed the dormitories of the world's most prestigious Islamic university Thursday morning and arrested scores of student activists in a sweeping raid targeting the powerful Muslim Brotherhood.

The raid came in the wake of a headline-grabbing demonstration at al-Azhar University in Cairo on Sunday. Authorities discovered large sums of cash and knives during the raids of the student dormitories, according to a statement from the Egyptian interior ministry. Ministry officials also accused Brotherhood leaders of trying to infiltrate student groups, encouraging youths to hold illegal demonstrations and teaching them martial arts.

Kongfu doctor

Kongfu? They must be referring to King-Kong Fu - a huge gorilla style of kung fu :-)

Story:
China -- Each morning some people practice kongfu in front of a hospital in Sanmenxia, Henan Province. Not the slow-motion qigong, but martial arts. They are hospital medical staff.

As doctor-patient confrontations become more violent and bloodier, these doctors and nurses hope that being better physically prepared can help them protect themselves if necessary.

Among these people, those most in need of such training are probably the obstetrics staff, probably the most understaffed, overworked, and most vulnerable to litigation.

World heritage sites

China -- Some of China's world heritage sites are poorly managed, China's Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng admitted at a recent conference.

At the national conference on world heritage protection, Sun said some local governments that make applications for world heritage status are aimed purely at tourism and economy development.

A number of accidents have been reported at heritage sites in China in recent years. Meese, 32, is a second-degree black belt and an instructor at Karam’s Martial Arts in Dover. He was practicing some techniques with student Bob Neidenthal of Strasburg when he learned a man was seen breaking into cars in the school’s parking lot.

Meese said a woman had come into the school to buy some martial arts supplies. She left but came right back in and reported what she had seen. She said the man tried to sell her drugs and she refused. Meese said he and Neidenthal – dressed in their karate gear – went outside to investigate.

Dangerous ...

Dangerous? What's next - someone who can kill, simply by talking about dental floss? I would argue that being "an accomplished martial arts practitioner" is not the same as being dangerous (dangerously stupid, maybe...).

You may however become a dangerous individual, by turning into a religious fanatic - and yes, any religion will do just fine.

Story:
New York: A judge on Thursday refused to order a terrorism suspect moved out of solitary confinement after prosecutors claimed he was so dangerous he suggested using prayer beads as a strangulation tool.

U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska denied the request by lawyers for Tarik Shah and his co-defendants that they be moved from special housing that leaves them isolated while they await trial.

The men are awaiting trial on charges that they conspired to help a terrorist organization.

Preska said the government had offered tape recordings to support that Shah was an accomplished martial arts practitioner who had tried to recruit others to join al-Qaida and offered to train them.

Drunk and abusive

This man was last seen on the TV programme ‘It’s me or the fat dog’ on November 21, when his wife’s pet chihuahua was trying to battle the bulge.

On Tuesday the former amateur boxer appeared at Bedford Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a police officer.

Magistrates were told that the man returned home just before midnight drunk and abusive. The police were called, after he began throwing his wife’s clothes out of the house.

Officers warned him that he faced arrest for breach of the peace and tried to talk him into leaving the house to calm down. The man attempted to go back into the house and five officers were involved in arresting him.

One of the officers was struck in the face and officers were instructed to use CS gas in the man’s apprehension.

The accused accepted that he may have struck the officer in a reckless manner but as he was a boxer and practises martial arts, the results of the punch would have been very different if he had intended to hit the policeman.

Karate England, the governing body of the sport, was in chaos last night after a statement posted on its website stated that the organisation had stopped trading and that the liquidator had been called in.

But when contacted by The Times, Victor Charles, the acting president of the board, said that the statement was premature and that Karate England remained a going concern.

Karate England was created from an amalgamation of three organisations in November 2005. It received more than £400,000 of public money from Sport England but is labouring under debts understood to be about £160,000. At an extraordinary general meeting in Burton upon Trent last month there were angry accusations of extravagance and mismanagement.

Karate fight

Great going folks - really nice way of teaching kids respect and control! And "disgruntled" ... How about plain stupid?

Story:
A disgruntled father punched a teenage girl after she knocked his son to the ground in a karate match Wednesday, city police said.

Officers went to the Annapolis Karate and Learning Center in Annapolis for a report of an assault that occurred at 6:30 p.m.

A woman told police her 13-year-old daughter had a sparring session with a 12-year-old boy when she knocked him to the ground.

The boy's father yelled at the girl and punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground. The woman went to the commissioner's office and a summons for second-degree assault was issued.

Excited delirium

Canada -- Three London police officers have been cleared of wrongdoing in the death of a promising martial arts expert whose organs failed a week after his arrest.

The Special Investigations Unit, Ontario's police watchdog, was called after Mitchell Koh, 34, died eight days after being arrested by police Sept. 12 and subsequently being admitted to hospital for doing drugs.

An inquest may be held to determine exactly how Koh died, an SIU spokesperson said yesterday, but that could not be confirmed at press time.

The SIU report says two police officers went to a Southdale Road convenience store about 6 a.m. on Sept. 12 after a report of a man waving a stick and two knives inside.

A bad lock-in

Houston -- A Tae Kwon Do instructor is under arrest Monday night. He’s accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old student.

The alleged assault happened at American Kids Athletics. It allegedly happened during a lock-in when children spend the night.

“They have lock-in every once in awhile. You pay a fee, the parents get to have a night out and the kids get to have fun,” a parent said.

The Harris County sheriff’s office responded, saying, “Medical examination shows there was some kind of trauma and was enough to warrant charges.” Lt. Ruben Diaz added, “He was given a polygraph and failed.”

Slowly going blind

If 14-year-old Tara Smith could ask people to do one thing for her, it would be to not treat her differently.

Tara was diagnosed with keratonus, a degenerative disease of the cornea, two years ago.

Since that time she has lost complete vision in her left eye and has been left with 6-60 vision in her right eye.

But slowly going blind has not stopped Tara from winning several gold medals in judo this year.

She took gold in the senior girls open and silver in the senior girl’s 0.55kg division at the Auckland International Championships in June and was also named winner of the girls open at the North Island Championships in August.

Sexual exploitation

Canada -- She was a young, promising athlete with unlimited potential to go far in taekwondo.

Her 35-year-old coach and instructor knew it, but his interest in her went far beyond the competitions and training.

Yesterday, the former Pan-American Games martial arts coach, now living in Aylmer, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation, admitting he carried on a sexual relationship with the girl after she turned 14 until she was 16.

Abuse past rebounds

Australia -- A martial arts instructor and former air cadets leader has been jailed for four years after being convicted of sexually abusing four teenage boys in the 1970s.

The 52-year-old state advertising manager was found guilty by a Brisbane District Court jury yesterday of six counts of indecently dealing with a boy under 16 years and one count of indecently dealing with a boy under 14 years.

During the week-long trial, the court heard the offences happened in the 1970s while the man, then aged 20-23 years, was involved with co-ordinating air cadet groups or students for his Brighton kung fu school.

Self-inflicted blows

UK -- Karate England, the governing body of the sport, created to great fanfare last November, is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy amid allegations of extravagance and mismanagement.

The Times can reveal evidence that raises serious questions about the role of Sport England, the quango that is understood to have allowed hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money to be spent by the governing body.

At an extraordinary meeting of Karate England in Burton upon Trent on Sunday, criticism was levelled at Nick Halafihi, the former head of Hull Kingston Rovers rugby league club, who was chief executive of Karate England until being dismissed for gross misconduct in September for alleged threatening behaviour at a board meeting. The board was also criticised.

Street brawl

What else - a martial arts expert with a karate kick ...

Story:
A young Brit was paralysed from the neck down by a martial art expert as a 20-strong gang attacked him and a pal.

James Edward and Mark Bell, both 20, were found unconscious in Benidorm following the street brawl at 2am. The lads had been drinking on Saturday night in the so-called British quarter when they were attacked.

Spanish cops are investigating whether mechanic James was karate kicked in the back or hit with a cosh.

He shows no outward signs of a sustained beating, leading cops to think one attacker knew exactly where to punch or kick.

Jekyll and Hyde

A 51-year-old British businessman was murdered outside his home on a peaceful Caribbean island. Vincent Connolly was shot four times as he stepped out of his car after spending the evening at a bar on the British Virgin Islands.

Yesterday police were investigating the possibility that Mr Connolly, who had a black-belt in karate, was seen arguing with a man outside the Mad Dog bar before he was shot.

And one local barman said Mr Connolly had an 'aggressive' side to his personality. He said: "I had an altercation with him a few weeks ago.

"He was a real Jekyll and Hyde character - a nice guy when he was sober but very aggressive after a few drinks.

A watchful eye

It's sounds kind of strange (at least to me) if parents don't get involved in their kids after school activities.
In our school we take it for granted that the parents stay and watch the classes - at least they are always more than welcome to!

Story:
A Kissimmee karate instructor has been in custody at the Osceola County Jail since early October, after several students alleged that he sexually abused them while they were under his supervision.

Unlike day-care centers and public schools, there are no safeguards in place to monitor the welfare of children when they attend extracurricular activities after school.

Marie Martinez, program manager for Orange County's Children's Advocacy Center, said it is not uncommon for child victims of sexual abuse to alert an adult, but the real issue is whether the adult listens. Some children will reveal a bit of information to test the adult's reaction, she said. But most child-sex victims are kept quiet with bribes and threats, she said.

Statistics show that up to 90 percent of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone the child knows, Martinez said, adding that adults the children tell are "oftentimes conflicted" if the perpetrator is a person they know and have trusted.

There is no governing body that regulates most after-school programs, but Martinez suggested parents make unannounced visits to their activities.

An inspirational piece from colfaxrecord.com: "Weimar girl says she'll walk on her own 'one day'"

Story:
California -- When Hope Adrian was first diagnosed with spastic deplegia (stiff legs) Cerebral Palsy, she was too young to understand her condition.

The complications caused damage to Hope's brain when she was born and resulted in the neurological disorder, which she knows all too well today.

"I am able to keep my balance when I walk, the only difference is that I am not able to stop quickly - I have to grab onto something," Hope said. "I can get up on my own too, it just takes a little more effort for me."

Though she doesn't have complete control of her legs, Hope doesn't let it slow her down too much.

She is active during recess at school and participates in soccer, karate, gymnastics and Girl Scouts.

'Ice' in East Timor

An explosion in the use of a dirty form of the drug "ice" among East Timorese youths is fuelling gang violence on the streets of Dili and sparking fears its distribution may be part of a wider move to destabilise the country's Government.

An adviser to the East Timorese Prime Minister said that an exploding level of methamphetamine use had contributed to the fighting that had left up to 10 people dead in the past week.

"It's nothing to do with enjoyment," said Jose Sousa-Santos, the Prime Minister's youth liaison officer. "It's more a pre-battle ritual."

He said much of the violence centred on two large martial arts gangs that contained about 30,000 members across the country.

"Keeping those two groups from going at it is probably my main concern at the moment," Mr Sousa-Santos said.

Different versions

South Africa -- A 23-year-old man is charged with murdering his parents in Crown North, Johannesburg, in October last year.

His sister, 18, and his wife, 22, are charged with being accessories to the crime and defeating the ends of justice.

Different versions of the event of the murders, which occurred on the first day of Ramadan, were heard in court. One version suggested that the father, 50, had killed his wife and, in revenge, his son had shot him dead.

Another version suggested that on the night in question, the mother, 49, had shot her husband before turning the gun on herself.

The state prosecutor was fired up on Tuesday, the first day of the trial. She put it to the court that on the night in question, at about 11 p.m., the accused, a firearms instructor and a black belt in karate, had entered his parents' bedroom and pumped six bullets into his father as he lay sleeping. Then he followed his mother into the bathroom and shot her in the face.

Gamers ...

An avid Dungeons & Dragons player "became his fantasy" when he slashed his co-worker to death with a homemade sword in October 2004, his attorney said Wednesday.

The defense attorney said his client was in the throes of a schizophrenic episode on Oct. 27, 2004, and believed he was a ninja killing a foe when he attacked and killed his 43-year-old co-worker.

The prosecutor said she believes the accused actions were not based on fantasy. She said his was instead acting out his "own grudge and own anger" against the victim and his other co-workers who he thought were bullying him over his obsession with fantasy-based games, his black nail polish and other eccentricities.

Failed suedo

Only in the 'Land of the great Suemo' (tip: it's not Japan), can stupid cases like this be brought to trial.
What's next - someone getting sued for making a student sweat, or messing up a student's hair? "Terrible folks, they even sweat in there - yuck!"

Story:
A woman whose nose was broken during a sparring match at a Long Island, N.Y., karate school was an experienced practitioner of the sport and had assumed the inherent risk of injury or "even death," a state judge has concluded in dismissing her lawsuit against the school and its owner.

Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Robert W. Doyle granted summary judgment to Empire State Karate of Smithtown and its president, Joyce Santamaria, dismissing a lawsuit filed against them by Carolyn Martezian.

In his decision, the judge denied a motion for summary judgment filed by a third defendant, Ralph Bertelle.

Bertelle, an employee of the school, struck Martezian in the face during a sparring match on Sept. 25, 2003. The injury required reconstructive surgery.

Child phobia

UK -- Britain is in danger of 'becoming a nation fearful of its young people', according to new research by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

A report to be published by the thinktank next month also concludes that Britons are less likely than their European neighbours to prevent teenagers from committing anti-social behaviour.

The study argues that a lack of adult supervision of teenagers in modern communities where residents no longer know their neighbours has 'increased the risk of youth crime and violence'.

Entitled, Freedom's Orphans: Raising Youth in a Changing World, the IPPR report warns that people are becoming increasingly wary of the nation's teenagers as a result, claiming that 1.5 million Britons considered moving away from their local area last year as a result of young people 'hanging around'.

The IPPR claims that research shows that teenagers involved in structured activities such as martial arts and sport are less likely to demonstrate 'problem behaviour' as teenagers.

Constance Rice

Constance Rice is a fighter.

In more ways than you’d think. Angry at herself for not fighting back when a man physically attacked her in college, she took up martial arts. She vowed to put the next guy in the hospital — and did.

But she actually prefers legal combat. Her fearlessness has made her one of the most successful civil rights attorneys in the country.

Next to getting three innocent men off of death row, however, Rice said her most important achievement was earning her black belt in tae kwon do. It was one of the hardest things she ever did.

"It's an all-male world, and it's physical combat. Women aren't trained to do that," said Rice, who convinced a South Korean instructor to take on his first female student years ago. "So not only do I do verbal combat and legal combat, but I do physical combat."

Steroids

It is not just baseball where steroid talk is a problem.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is a rising phenomenon in sports. UFC, for short, is a mixed martial arts promotion that combines every type of fighting from boxing to wrestling to Jiu-Jitsu into one competitive sport.

Stephan Bonnar, 29, is one of the UFC's most popular up and coming superstars. After a decision loss to friend Forrest Griffin, Bonnar tested positive for Boldenone Metabolite, an anabolic steroid mainly used for treatment of horses.

Bonnar is not the only UFC fighter to test positive for steroids.

Josh Barnett, 28, became the youngest UFC Heavyweight Champion ever when he defeated Randy Couture in March 2002. Barnett was later stripped of the title for failing a drug test.

"This problem is not going away,"said Julie Veen, a doctor in White Plains, N.Y. "Not only are steroids damaging to your body, but they can ruin your career. There's no need for any athlete or anyone period to use any illegal supplements."

An option, after all

"Failure cannot be considered an option!" Really ... Re-he-he-heally? Unless his objective was to get laughed at, I think this Yale graduate has to take it back! What a character - what a guy :-)

Story:
Thousands of Ivy Leaguers circulate their resumes each year to New York's investment banks, but few garner as much attention as this person, who last week submitted an 11-page resume and video to UBS's human resources department.

By the week's end, the Yale University senior's video had raised scores of eyebrows and sparked much laughter in nearly every firm on Wall Street.

The man identifies himself on his resume as a multi-sport professional athlete, the CEO of two companies, and an investment adviser. The video depicts him lifting a 495-pound weight, serving a tennis ball at 140 miles an hour, and ballroom dancing with a scantily clad female. Finally, he emerges enrobed in a white karate suit and breaks six bricks in one fell swoop.

Between athletic bits, the man takes the opportunity to opine on success. After being described in the opening lines of the video as "a model of personal success and development to everybody," he states, "Failure cannot be considered an option."

Karate midget

The Funniest Cop Stories Ever definitely sounds like a must read book :-)

Story:
"In what other profession will you find yourself chasing a midget in a tuxedo down a fire escape?"

The slightly politically incorrect question is that of former police officer Scott Baker, who with Tom Philbin has written "The Funniest Cop Stories Ever." A tale about the well-dressed little person is among them.

"Me and my partner, Nicky, get a call to go to a building on Church Street," chronicle the authors, telling the story from the perspective of the officer who related it to them.

A woman had been assaulted, the cops found. The possible perpetrator had been her boyfriend, a small man — 3 feet 10 inches, to be exact — who "knew karate," the woman explained. That's how he was able to kick in her door on his way inside. It was a violent entrance, but at some point, apparently, his intentions had been honorable.

"He was wearing a tuxedo and carrying a violin case," the woman said. "He was going to propose to me."

After the idea of marital bliss went bad, the man fled down a fire escape from the woman's fifth-floor apartment.

Confuse-Us speaks #7

I'm at loss for words, I truly am. Maybe someone should begin to tell these people that there is a "slight" difference between tae kwon do and karate? And a 12-year-old second-degree black belt? Good for her! Personally, I think I have to lie down and rest ...

The 12-year old's small stature belies a talent that she has been developing for most of her life. Since Keeney turned 4 years old and was allowed to register for a class, she has been learning tae kwon do.

Now a second-degree black belt, Keeney said her classmates are careful. "They don't mess with me," Keeney said. "They know I'm a black belt, so they don't ever mess with me."

(This is) a path that Keeney, though still young, has her heart set on. "I'm going to be doing karate until the day I die," she said. "I love karate."

An Indian affair

India -- A group of over 20 miscreants reportedly looted and injured a team of eight judo players and their coach on board a Lucknow-Bareily passenger train in the outskirts of the city early this morning. They decamped with Rs 16,000 cash, three mobile phones, a digital camera and a bag. An FIR has been lodged against unidentified persons.

According to reports, the group of miscreants boarded the train at Nighohan railway station at around 6.30 am. They reportedly started misbehaving and threatening the passengers as soon as the train pulled out of the station.

They first entered into an argument with a female member of the judo team over a seat. When the rest of the judo players objected, the group reportedly beat them up with sticks and other weapons. The train passengers said the group also snatched their valuable.

Confuse-Us speaks #6

"Doug Robinson and his son, Howie, daughter, Noelle, and wife, Kimba, practice tae kwon do recently at All Star Karate and Kickboxing Gym in Hagerstown."

Yeah, that makes so much sense, since the three arts are "one and same" (irony mode).

Apart from the above, this is great article about a deaf girl building confidence with "Kara-Tae-Kick-Do".

Charges filed

Maryland -- Charges are being filed against a 37-year-old local tae kwon do instructor.

The man is accused of sexually abusing two of his students at a martial arts school in Rockville, and police want to know if there are more alleged victims. Investigators fear the man may have a long history of sexual abuse.

The allegations were made by a former student who is now 24, according to authorities. She said the abuse began when she was 14 and continued for four years.

Advanced skills

It seems like this clip is showing people demonstrating off their skills on a sort of martial arts audition. The winner is clearly the dummy, who comes out on top every time!

You've probably seen the guy with nunchaku attempting a back-flip? Well, there's more in the same vein - all very funny.

I suspect this is staged - it is really too far out to be serious :-)

But then again - you have a lot of special "talented" people appearing on the various 'Idol' TV shows too ...

Scared to leave home

Scotland -- A cancer patient has been left scared to leave her home after being brutally kicked in the face by a martial arts student.

A 19-year-old amateur kickboxer assaulted and racially abused a 55-year-old woman, as she returned from a trip to buy a birthday present for her daughter.

The assault took place in daylight in Edinburgh, on March 4.

The woman, who underwent cancer surgery shortly before the attack, said she fears reprisals from other Asian youths in the area after giving evidence against him.

She said: "It has left me worried about going out of my house. He has a lot of friends in the area, which is frightening."

Apalling

The 99p download entitled Put 'Em Down, Take 'Em Out: Knife Fighting Techniques from Folsom Prison by American author Don Pentecost is being sold by a number of online traders under the guise of a martial arts-based self-defence book.

The 54-page book, described by trading standards officers as "appalling", features techniques allegedly devised in one of America's most violent prisons (made famous by the country singer Johnny Cash in his classic live recording Folsom Prison Blues), to protect against knife attack.

However, the guide also features detailed information on how to attack and kill using a knife as a weapon.

Home invasion

Canada -- Two home invaders got more than they bargained for when they were confronted by a homeowner trained in martial arts.

The homeowner and his cousin arrived at the home in Toronto shortly before midnight Sunday and found two robbers wearing balaclavas and armed with a pistol and a screwdriver, in the bedroom.

The thugs demanded cash, and one was lured from the home with the promise that there was $1,000 in a vehicle. Outside, the martial arts expert elbowed the gunman, knocking his weapon to the ground.

When the other intruder heard his crony shout for help, he rushed outside and picked up the gun and the two started to run away.

Pink fighting

Finally - the man responsible for the best fight sequences ever on film!

Are we talking about Segal? Chan? Lee? No, none other than the great master Peter Sellers (Yes, yes I kneuw that, you knoew :)

Here's a highlight of some of his antics - not only his fighting skills you knoew - all hilarious stuff!

To me, noone comes remotely close to Sellers in the Pink Panther movies (apart from Monthy Python at their best). These scenes make me laugh so hard, again and again! And the comments ... pure genius :-)

Finnish sentence

Finland -- Taekwondo instructor Sami Olavi Greus was sentenced in Oulu District Court to four years and three months imprisonment for sex crimes targeting young girls.

The 33-year-old Greus was accused of nearly 800 illegal acts with minors. The court rejected only two of the 22 counts in the indictment.

The acts in question took place between 1997 and 2005 in different parts of the north of Finland. All of the victims practiced martial arts. Some of the girls were aged 14 and 15, but most were aged 16 and 17 when the molestation took place.

The modus operandi was the same with nearly all of the victims. He would first praise their skills and appearance during taekwondo practice, he would drive them to the training sessions himself, and finally he would contact them either by telephone or e-mail, asking the girls to visit him at his home after the lessons.

(Almost) harmony

Tai chi is supposed to give you inner peace, harmony and all that stuff. Maybe this guy missed a lesson or two?

Story:
Scotland -- A 55-year-old retired bricklayer assaulted a young girl by pushing her against a wall after she laughed at him carrying out Tai chi martial arts movements in a Peebles street, a court heard yesterday.

The Edinburgh man also approached the 12-year-old girl and her friends the following day and after swearing at them waved a police officer's business card at them.

Dicipline, focus, passion

Besides being Verona's rock-solid No. 1 golfer and Badger South all-conference choice this season, Jen Engelke is also a second-degree black belt in karate. Ask her about combining the two sports and she'll tell you it's the best marriage since music and the iPod.

Engelke uses the same discipline, focus and passion to succeed.

"In karate you often deal with focus. That comes in handy in golf because when you hit a bad shot or have a bad hole, you use that focus to put it behind you and keep going," explained Engelke, who has that rare ability as a teen-ager to look adults directly in the eyes when she speaks to them.

"It's the same thing if you're doing a form at a (karate) tournament. If you screw up, you have to keep going and stay focused. You can't stop and start over again."

Once-quiet, reserved

Terre Haute — Jimmy Hudson was a quiet, reserved boy who spent the past two years being bullied and picked on by classmates.

Now, the confident 9-year-old stands up for himself and looks forward to going to school every day.

Hudson began to change while taking summer classes in tae kwon do, a self-defense system similar to karate.

“He’s more likable, he speaks up, he expresses himself,” Cheryl Hudson said about her son.

Doing karate moves

Oh yes, it sure seems like this guy needs hospital time ... urgently :-)

A security guard advised the man was there on hospital business.

Senior gets fit

In his 60's, Ted Kavanau was so out of shape that he starting exercising in bed and wound up winning a karate black belt. With nationally known chiropractor Dr. Genie Tartell, they have introduced this exercise program for others.

Kavanau, Founder of CNN Headline News, and Tartell have combined elements of yoga, Pilates, karate and stretching. They explain the program in their new book "Get Fit in Bed".

Kavanau says these exercises helped him at age 73 to still do karate sparring and go rounds in boxing competitions.

Collector only

A collector "aggressively waving a four-and-a-half foot long sword at someone in the street."

Yes, sure ... just like I'm Tarzan (or is it his monkey...?). How about this lunatic collecting some jail time instead?

Story:
UK -- Police seized a cache of medieval-style weapons from a Carlisle bedsit after a man brandished a Chinese sword in the city center.

Aglionby Street was brought to a standstill at teatime, after witnesses reported a man aggressively waving a four-and-a-half foot long sword at someone in the street.

He was taken to the city's police station, where he was given a police caution and released.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The case was investigated and when all the facts were considered, this was deemed to be the most appropriate course of action. He is a collector. He has agreed to let us dispose of the weapons. We do not think it is appropriate for this person to have them in his home."

Kung food

Sounds like a great place to eat - suplise! "My kung food is better than you kung food!" :-)

Source:
Diners have recently thronged a restaurant in Shanghai that named its dishes, tables and even chopsticks after elements of popular kung fu novels written by a famous novelist Jin Yong.

The restaurant is furnished with simple wooden benches and tables, each of which were distinguished with the names of martial arts schools such as "Wudang," "Shaolin" and "Qingcheng." Chopsticks are referred to as "plural nun chucks," and scoops are "flying knives."

There is no menu; waiters will suggest which dishes should be served according to diners' tastes.

Grappling with Gene

Well written story about "the toughest man alive", "Judo" Gene LeBell. Not one for using praise and positive affirmations it may seem. Like the story indicates: LeBell tells everyone who'll listen that he's a "sadistic bastard". Still, with that pink gi of his, he have to have a great sense of humor! :-)

Story:
The air hangs hot and the room spins like a carnival ride. In the middle of this revolving mess, I can vaguely see a man in a pink gi. Gene LeBell is going to kill me.

I have done many stupid things as a reporter. But none of my previous foolishness prepared me for this.

He looked at me with narrowed eyes, suspicious from the start. "What the hell do you want?" he said. "Yeah, I heard you were coming," he said, voice raspy like gravel rattling down a drain. "I thought you wanted money or something. With that hat, you look like a rabbi."

Bored, and stupid

Ontario, Canada -- The story goes that one kid turned up for the fight hanging onto the open trunk of a Volkswagen Beetle wearing a ninja costume. Until then, there was nothing remarkable about the lunch hour crowd of Grade 12 guys hanging out by the doors of the indoor hockey arena across the street from Orangeville District secondary school.

After leaping from the trunk of the car and attacking his challenger, the ninja ended up pummeled and beaten on the ground.

What has police and parents shocked is not that schoolyard scores were settled before a hooting, cheering crowd – but that videos of the melees ended up online on YouTube courtesy of camera phones and hand-held digital video cameras the students own themselves.

Iron balls

Here's another kung-fu clip.

It shows how to take kicks to the groin, pulling heavy stuff with your "friend" etc.

Though it's impressive stuff indeed, I'm still left with one simple question: Why? :-)

Personally I'd rather spend other ways to protect myself.

And, if you have to do this lengthy quigong routine before a fight to protect the "little fellow", then what's the point? Guess I'm missing something here.

Sumo shame-o

What? No sue-mo, not even a little sue-do? What are you guys thinking about? Sue, the f** (sorry ... big) feelah! "You sumo me, I'll sue-mo your diaper a** - sumor or later!"

Story:
Japan's longest-serving active sumo wrestler has retired in shame after punching an opponent in the face, Japanese media has reported.

A disgruntled Kotokanyu saw red after losing a bout to 19-year-old Ikioi in Tokyo at the weekend, storming into the locker room and punching him.

His outburst was just the latest incident of violence to shatter the serene image of the ancient Japanese sport.

Islamartial arts?

Somalia - Policemen from the Islamic court movement - which controls the Somali capital and much of the south of the country - recently arrested a martial arts teacher as he was giving a karate lesson to six women.

The teacher, Aweys Abati Orafeyo, is charged with violating Islamic ('Shariah') law, which forbids a man from being alone in a room with women who do not belong to his family.

"The same applies to a male teacher who may not remain on his own with his female pupils," said the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC)'s local leader in the central Hamarweyne district of Mogadishu, Sheikh Kadar Keyse Abdirahman, who issued Orafeyo's arrest warrant.

School karate

South Africa -- The Human Rights Commission plans to hold public hearings on the level of violence in schools which are said to be out of control with deaths and severe injuries to pupils.

Parents and the education system have been blamed for ill-mannered children and with no immediate solution in sight, the HRC has opted for public hearings.

A Johannesburg school is teaching karate as a way of adding discipline to the curriculum. Olga da Silva, a principal at the school, says they are experiencing all this verbal abuse at home, so they are frustrated, because of the conditions at home, and they come to school, it spills over into the school.

Grandma-master

No! Surely it can't stop at great grandmaster? Why? What about Really Great Grandmaster, Absolutely Fantastic Super Grandmaster, Even Greater Grandmaster, or Can't Possibly Be Greater Than This Great Grandmaster?

Mind you, I'm not joking with the woman here, all kudos to her! 17 years does seem like a short time though...

Story:
Goldia Hansel is 53, a grandmother, and a grandmaster at a Karate Academy in Alexandria.

The Dayton woman, reached the level of grandmaster last month. It's the second highest rank next to a great grandmaster.

Hansel has taught classes 14 of the 17 years she's been studying the martial arts.
