WTF Politics Again

The South Korean government is reportedly denying rumors that it is covertly backing a candidate for the upcoming presidential election in the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) , claiming such accusations are groundless.

"The Korean government has nothing to do with the WTF election,'' an official of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said.

One of four applicants for the WTF top job, Vice President Nat Indrapana of Thailand, stirred up controversy at the British International Taekwondo Tournament in Manchester, which ended on August 29.

Mr Indrapana allegedly said that he and the South Korean culture, sports and tourism minister, had reached an agreement that the main office of the WTF would be built in Seoul if Indrapana, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was to be selected as President of WKF.

Taekwondo Master Returns

South Korean-born taekwondo master Choi Jung-hwa -- accused of engaging in pro North Korean activities -- returned to South Korea in September 2008, according to iht.com.

Choi, directed by North Korea, is said to have hired two agents to assassinate President Chun Doo-hwan during a 1982 visit to Canada. The plot was detected and Choi immediately went into hiding in Eastern Europe and North Korea.

54-year-old Choi is son of (general) Choi Hong-hi. General Choi is widely recognised as the "founder of taekwondo". General Choi founded International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) in 1966.

The general emigrated to Canada in 1972, supposedly because of the South's staunchly anti-communist ruling military regime. His son followed two years later.

When the general died of a cancer in 2002, North Korean officials selected a North Korean to head the ITF. An angry Choi Jung-hwa consequently set up another taekwondo body in Canada, claiming this was the only legitimate ITF organisation.

South Korean Amnesty

South Korea announced an amnesty yesterday for 434 politicians and businesspeople, including suspended International Olympic Committee member Park Yong-sung.

Park, former chairman of the Doosan Group, saw his IOC membership suspended last year after he was sentenced to a suspended prison term and a fine on embezzlement charges in a case stemming from a family feud over control of South Korea's oldest conglomerate.

The 66-year-old is still president of the International Judo Federation, a post that automatically makes him an IOC member, his office said.

The IOC ethics commission will hold a meeting and make a recommendation to the IOC executive board about Park, said Julie Lee, an IJF official.

WTF reform

Korea -- Choue Chung-won, the president of taekwondo's world governing body, said Wednesday he will complete full-fledged reform of the global body by this month, including recruiting foreign employees.

"Reform is the only way for the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) to survive, and without change the WTF has no meaning to its existence. With sweeping organizational changes, the body will soon embark on a new start," Choue said in a news conference in the body's headquarters in Seoul.

"I will transform the WTF in a drastic way and put more internationally minded and professional staff into the secretariat to make the WTF a truly global sports federation, helping taekwondo retain its Olympic status for good," Choue said.

Confuse-Us speaks #10

Russian President Vladimir Putin likes to play karate (Japanese style of fighting). Belarusian "President" Aleksandr Lukashenko likes to play hockey. So, both of them are using very different means to resolve Russia-Belarus gas conflict.

This is according to americanchronicle.com

Sorry to be such a pain in the you know what part of the human anatomy, but Putin does judo, not karate.

Judging from the level of knowledge being demonstrated here - I wouldn't be too surprised if Lukashenko really likes to play the slide trombone. Same s***, right?

Alleged rape

The Philippine Karatedo Federation is conducting its own investigation on the alleged rape case filed by a female athlete against her coach/instructor in Cebu City.

PKF president Ed Ponce said yesterday that he has just learned of the incident from a friend in Cebu, but promised to personally lead an investigative panel to look into the merits of the case and help the victim get the justice she deserves.

Sketchy reports received by the Philippine Olympic Committee, through text and e-mailed messages, claimed that the 19-year-old karateka, a consistent medalist in local tournaments, was allegedly sexually abused by her trainor.
