No Crocido

Malaysia -- When he wanted to demonstrate his kung-fu "skills" in Kuching on Borneo, a man described as "mentally unstable" ended up in hospital, theborneopost.com reports.

The shirtless man, in his 50s and wearing crocs on his feet (!), supposedly attempted to impress a group of young women Saturday evening at about 7 p.m.

Witnesses said his impromptu display of "martial arts skills" included "scissor kicks" and "karate chops" ... before he slipped during one of the kicks and fell backwards, headfirst to the floor.

Note to self: Scrap the crocido idea (another reason not to wear the ugliest footwear ever invented). Similarly bad idea: Trying to impress the ladies with dumb fu.

The Confidence to Help

Pennsylvania -- An 18-year-old taekwondo teacher at a Lebanon martial arts school was driving home in Jackson Township one Monday in September when he suddenly noticed "something red" lying along the rural road.

The young man told whptv.com how he caught a glimpse of an object and when he looked back he realized it was a person.

That "object" turned out to be a bound, gagged an unconscious Bethel Township teenager (16) who was reported missing from his home.

While waiting for emergency assistance, the good Samaritan attempted to flag down at least three cars. None of them stopped. The young man said he initially was concerned - wondering if the scene might actually be a setup - adding "I had the confidence to see if that person was alright."

Cuts Hair Chases Criminals

Refugio "Fugi" Escobedo from Atlanta, Georgia is 71 and is leading what seems to be an interesting kind of double life. What else would you be saying about of a combination of bounty hunter and ... are you ready for this ... hair stylist!

The man - who certainly is quite a character with long and flowing black hair - is described as a self-defense expert by ajc.com. As far as the quite risky bounty hunting business goes, he says he often works alone.

Escobedo, who earned a karate black belt in Puerto Rico, says he wanted to attend beauty school in Texas from the moment he looked into a beauty college in Houston and saw "200 or 300 women in this place."

Later, Escobedo expanded his martial arts training to aikido, as well as Muay Thai and other disciplines.

Back With a Vengeance

Minnesota -- You may recall the St. Paul guy called "Afro Ninja". If you do, you may also remember how he tried to do a back flip/nunchaku routine back in 2004 and ended up with a rather impressive - and painful, for sure - face plant.

Startribune.com reported on August 5 how the man - who is actually a professional stuntman - is working on turning misfortune into a positive thing. How? Allegedly by making a movie about it. The clip has reportedly been the basis of a low-budget film that he has starred in as well as produced, called "Afro Ninja: Destiny".

All the credit to him, I say. Seriously, show me someone who haven't taken a nosedive and I'll show you a liar (or a person with severe lapses of memory).

The only thing that separates our mishaps to his, is that there were no camera to shoot us when we did our "seriously silly break-fall routine" :-)

Judo Bravery Award

Another Violent Fighter

UK -- A 32-year-old man - a "submission grappler" and trained in mixed martial arts according to himself - attacked a TV presenter in a London hotel room on March 28, 2008. The man reportedly realised the relationship was breaking down at that point, according to telegraph.co.uk.

Martial Arts and ADD Children

There's no doubt about it, regular exercise and activity in organized sports, such as martial arts, may potentially be a very good thing for children with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).

These activities tend to reduces stress and promote well being. Also, it is widely agree that emotional and social skills are developed and enhanced.

Gilroydispatch.com had a great article about this issue in August 2008, and you can read more about it here. Great pieces of advice for parents and teachers/coaches!

An Old Punk And Tai Chi

James Newell Osterberg, Jr. is probably better known as Iggy Pop. The 61-year-old rock icon - known from the legendary band 'The Stooges'.

Anyone who has been to an Iggy concert can attest to how the guy really has an amazing physique for his age. And as we all know he's definitely been around the block a couple of times as far as drug abuse and injuring himself during shows goes.

Newspostonline.com recently had a story about the veteran rocker. Iggy revealed that he was in great shape due to the fact that he did tai chi (which he practices regularly) ... as well as a "slamming girlfriend" :-)

Iggy Pop and tai chi ... I'll be darned.

Judo Accusations

First of all: Sorry for the long absence guys! It's been hectic for a while, but now I'm back on track!

Off to the post:
In June 2008, American judo Olympian Ronda Rousey wrote about the accusations against high ranking judo official Fletcher Thornton on her blog.

Thornton was accused of drugging and molesting teenage competitors he coached nearly 30 years ago.

In July, he resigned from the USA Judo board of directors on day before The New York Times took up on the story about the affidavit from 1981, accusing Thornton of the sexual assaults in the late 70s,
