Australia -- IVF (In vitro fertilisation) is an established and widely used treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology haven't worked out.
"Down under", a 32-year-old man and his wife have recently been denied having such a treatment continued, according to heraldsun.com.au.
Why? Well, it appears the man - a former school aide - has been released from prison after serving time for having illicit sex with a 'cognitively impaired' teenager. The victim was reportedly a student at a school where the man taught martial arts.
Doubts have been raised whether or not the man comprehends where his moral boundaries are, or what duty he owes a child. The man has been called immature and it is said he is lacking any significant insight into his behavior.
During the trial, a psychologist recommended that specific treatment in the sex offenders program was needed in order for the defendant to develop comprehensive remorse.
Without knowing the details in this case, I have to admit it appears to me that denying IVF treatment seems the right thing to do here.

Death Penalty
Florida -- Former karate instructor and junior champion, Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, was handed down a pair of death sentences in the murders of Melanie and Byrd Billings, according to pnj.com.
The murders, described as "execution-style" was proven to be done by Gonzales July 9, 2009 inside the couple's home in Beulah.
Gonzalez reportedly led a gang of five men and one teenager to the spacious home early in the morning. The gang were after a "fortune" that Gonzales believed were kept there.
While handing down the sentence, the judge told the court that Gonzales clearly was the ringleader - directing the other participants.
The other defendants, cooperating with the state, testified that Gonzalez was the one who shot and killed the couple in the master bedroom.

Charges Against TKD Schools
Maryland -- Administrative charges has been filed against area karate (sic.) schools for not registering as health clubs, as required by state law.
The charges are filed against two taekwondo schools, one in Laurel, the other in Clarksburg in Montgomery County, according to hometownannapolis.com. Also the schools' owner has been charged, according to the State Attorney General.
The accused allegedly sold health club memberships without the required registration. Also, members is reported to have paid the schools for summer-camp services that were never provided.

Acquitted of Rape Charge
Colorado -- A former member of the U.S. Olympic judo team has been acquitted by a jury of raping a 15-year-old girl in Colorado Springs in 2008, according to gazette.com.
He was however found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of having oral sex with a juvenile who was at least 10 years his junior.
The man will be required to register as a sex offender as a result of the misdemeanor convictions. He is facing up to two years in the county jail when he is sentenced February 8, 2011.
Also, a civil lawsuit the girl and her parents filed against him and the girl's judo team is still pending.

Instructor Takes Alford Plea
North Carolina -- A 62-year-old karate instructor has taken an Alford guilty plea to seven charges of indecent liberties with a child, according to legal.blogs.starnewsonline.com.
An Alford plea means the defendant admits enough evidence exists to convict, but that he does not admit the accusations.
The man was accused in 2009 of molesting seven students, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, in his after-school program in Wilmington.

Where's the Justice?
You will probably be just as chocked as I was when I read about this case from Texas. It involves a taekwondo coach who allegedly assaulted a young girl at the Houston daycare center where the man was working.
The case goes back to October 2006 when the young girl told her mother that her taekwondo coach brought her into a room and sat her on his lap. She said the man placed a blanket over her as she sat with him, and that he used his finger to assault her.
From here on out, the case is a mess of information not being presented to the grand jury, the seemingly shady actions of Harris County prosecutors, and how the mother has been fighting a losing battle to get the man to trial for his crime.
In December 2006, the man was fired from the daycare center when investigators from Child Protective Services concluded that he did in fact sexually assault the girl.
Even so, the perpetrator will not face charges for sexually assaulting the young girl, ten years old at the time.
In my humble opinion, there seems to be something really fishy about this whole case...

Arnis, Now National Sport
Philippines -- President Arroyo recently signed a law declaring arnis as the national martial art and sport in the Philippines. The law reportedly also mandates that an arnis competitions is to be played first at the annual national games.
Up until now, arnis (also called kali or escrima) has often plays second fiddle to other non-Filipino martial arts such as judo, taekwondo and karate in terms of prominence, according to sports.inquirer.net.

Alabama -- A man is reportedly accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill the judge and prosecutor involved in a 2008 trial where he was charged with illegal possession of ammunition, according to blog.al.com.
The accused is attempting to convince the court he is too sick to be tried on the murder-for-hire charges by offering a letter from his doctor. However, prosecutors have said that the "doctor" is no medical doctor at all and that he may in fact indirectly be involved in the case.
The man who is being referred to as a doctor is reportedly identified a Ph.D., a naturopath -- an alternative medicine practitioner holding a holistic approach to treating disease -- and a "doctor of martial arts".

Florida -- Christmases are hard for Patti Robinson from Latana. Eight years ago, she received a 2 a.m. Christmas morning telephone call every parent dreads. A voice on the line informed her that her only child was dead.
When her son Jeffrey was 11, something so terrible happened to him that she believes that's what caused him to take his own life at age 31.
The boy was repeatedly molested by his karate instructor, who Robinson said also molested at least two other boys. But by the time her son and the others were ready to come forward in court, the law wouldn't let them.
"The statute of limitations had run out," Robinson said. "And we couldn't do anything, which I really think contributed to the hopelessness that my son felt."
Florida law gives victims of certain sex offenses, including "non-forcible rape" of children age 12 and older, until they are 21 to press charges. Lawsuits must be filed before the victim reaches age 26.
Up to 70 percent of child sexual-abuse cases aren't reported until after the deadline, West Palm Beach attorney Michael Dolce said.

Illegal MMA Competition
Florida -- Two men, 23 and 51, were recently accused of holding an unsanctioned amateur MMA competition in a gym in a Zephyrhills strip mall, officials said.
The men were facing felony prohibited competitions charges, according to tampabay.com. No mixed martial arts fights are allowed at the amateur level in Florida.

NYC Conductor Sentenced
New York -- The New York City subway conductor who fatally stabbed a man he claimed he took to be one of his attackers, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
A Manhattan Justice sentenced the martial arts-trained man for the murder of 40-year-old Flonarza Byas on January 10, 2008.
Prosecutors said the accused mistakenly thought Mr Byas was part of the group that attacked and stabbed him. They said the accused chased Byas, caught him and then stabbed him 15 times.
The 40-year-old conductor was convicted in May by a jury that rejected his self defense claim. His lawyer said his client did not intend to commit a crime, but mistakenly thought he was defending himself.

In August, the jujitsu-trained man was indicted on a murder charge. Authorities now claim the bystander was attempting to flee the chaotic scene, according to 1010wins.com.
Police had originally ruled out filing homicide charges, ruling the killing as an act of self-defense. However, prosecutors presented the case to a grand jury, which decided to indict the man.

Washington -- A 45-year-old former Yakima karate instructor has been convicted of two counts of second-degree molestation of a 13-year-old girl. He was initially hit with child rape charges.
The jury had to settle for the lesser charge to avoid deadlocking. A female juror apparently struggled with the idea that an older man could have raped a 13-year-old.
(My comment: Is this woman for real, or simply plain stupid? Wow, what an idiot...)

Karate Master, 'Predator'?
South Carolina -- The 40-year old owner of a karate and fitness center in Indian Land turned himself in to authorities August 6, according to fortmilltimes.com.
The man is reportedly being evaluated to determine whether or not he will be civilly confined under the state's 'Sexually Violent Predator Act'.
In 2004, he served six months in jail, convicted of two sexual assault. Following his release, a circuit court judge found no probable cause to hold the man as a sexually violent predator.

Karate-style beatings? Are they in fact talking about the heavily patented and totally mortal "judo-chop"? Anyhow, I digress.
A McKees Rocks man was convicted in 1988 of killing three elderly women -- all in their 80s -- with what post-gazette.com calls "karate-style beatings" in 1985.

Wanted on Drug Charges
Texas -- A 25-year-old man wanted for violating a probation related to drug charges is wanted by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, according to kvia.com.
After his arrest, the man continued working with children as a martial arts instructor, authorities says. It is believed the man is aware he is wanted by authorities.

Court in Favor of Hijab Ban
France -- As you may recall, two French Muslim girls (aged 11 and 12) were expelled from school in 1999 following their refusal to take off their hijab during sport classes. At the time, the school said that hijab was deemed not compatible with physical education classes.
Recently, the top European human rights court in Strasbourg ruled in favor of the school, saying the ban was not a violation of the European Human Rights.
The European Court of Human Rights said: "The court observed that the purpose of the restriction on the applicants' right to manifest their religious convictions was to adhere to the requirements of secularism in state schools," according to Reuters and islamonline.net.
There have been several reported cases involving the use of hihab within the martial arts also.
For instance, on November 14, payvand.com reported how a female Iranian karateka, Helen Sepahi, was dismissed from the World Karate championships in Japan when she refused to take off her hijab prior to a fight.

A Royal Insult
Morocco -- An 18-year-old karate champion -- and obvious FC Barcelona soccer fan -- has received a one year suspended prison sentence for writing "God, Homeland and Barca" on a classroom chalkboard, according to iht.com.
The motto of Morocco is "God, Homeland and the King", and authorities ruled that the scribbling showed "disrespect to the kingdom's national motto". The youngster now fears that the sentence could seriously affect his professional future as well as his sports career.

Ex-Fighter Road Rage Violence
Pennsylvania -- A 33-year-old man from South Philadelphia has reportedly been charged with attempted murder for shooting and critically injuring another driver in what appears to be a rod-rage incident.
The former US Marine and MMA fighter, who never had any previous trouble with the law, was arrested October 5.
It is believed that after going through a toll plaza, the 41-year-old shooting victim cut off another driver near a road exit, police said.
Police said there was an exchanged of words between the drivers, whereupon the victim opened the roof of his car and gestured to the other driver. The other driver then fired before suddenly taking off, according to philly.com.
