Stab Proof? Not Quite

There is apparently a large contingent of true blood, experimental (or you could make that simply: mental) martial arts nutcases world-wide - Russia being no exception.

When most martial artists are seriously boring and predictable individuals - like yours truly - there are a group of la-la land explorers ... people who will attempt to pull off the most unpredictable stunts without missing a beat or giving it a second thought.

What can I say but thank you ... from the bottom of my intrigued and safety conscious, 9-to-5 boring, regular guy type of soul!
Police have detained a resident of Russia's Rostov region for stabbing a friend who claimed his "abs" were strong enough to stop any knife thrust, the regional Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The suspect told police that during a party he and a friend decided to experiment with martial arts techniques. "The owner of the home got a big kitchen knife and asked his guest to stab him in the stomach. He refused at first, saying he was afraid he would kill the host. However, the host said that in his childhood he was involved in martial arts and the knife could not penetrate his abs," the statement said.
Unfortunately, that was not the case.
"Abs-olutely" freaking awesome. This has to come up at top in any Darwin Awards ranking, right?

Also, I can't help but wonder if a decent doze of alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the proceedings?

The student had allegedly flirted with fighter's girlfriend. When he arrived a little later, the fighter spoke to the victim for several seconds before hitting him in the face and calmly walking away.

Oh and in case you're wondering, the only ones hurt here were people. The boys showed respect for their opponent - hats off to them :-)

Russian MMA Nutcase

Guys, guys... Come on... A criminal, probably insane, and definitely a right-wing nutcase by any standard. But still, let us welcome him with open arms, a big hug and an even bigger bottle of vodka. We are all so cozy and friendly over here; we like to see the good things in people, you know...

Story:
Norway -- A Russian MMA champ, known as Tarzan the Redhead, who fled a psychiatric facility in St. Petersburg has been held in Oslo after applying for asylum, according to themoscowtimes.com.

Police officials said the man was detained on suspicion of violating the country's law on gun ownership and having possible links to organized crime.

A YouTube video shows the 30-year-old man entering a Norwegian immigration office (and yes, that is Russian and Norwegian being spoken).

In the video you can see how "Tarzan", wearing a sweatshirt with Nazi insignia, says, "Sieg heil," as he raises his arm in a Nazi salute before entering the office.

The fighter tells a female immigration official that he arrived in the country by boat and gives her the pistol and his driver's license. He also asks her to search his name in Google.

Dmitry Dyomushkin, who is a friend of the man and the leader of the banned ultranationalist Slavic Union, said "I wished him all the best and told him not to act like a nutcase."

...which apparently didn't help much I might be tempted to add.

The heavyweight MMA champion was found guilty in 2009 of carrying out several robberies. However, he was sent to a criminal psychiatric hospital after an examination which deemed him insane.

Muay Thai Champ Killed

Russia -- In what appears to be a contract killing, 27-year-old former world champion in Muay Thai ("Thai boxing") Muslim Abdullayev, was found shot dead in Moscow on December 24.

The body was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the head at a stadium in the north of Moscow, according to news.com.au. Two men allegedly attacked the former champ as he came from a training session.

Russian Muay Thai federation officials claimed Abdullayev had been involved in something they called an "unpleasant conflict", which may have involved former members of the Russian national team.

Murder, No Big Deal...

Israel -- Dimitry Kirilik is a former Russian ice hockey player and taekwondo expert who immigrated to Israel in 2004.

The man, who allegedly was wanted in Russia for armed robbery, is now suspected of murdering an Israeli family of six (the Oshrenko family), according to jpost.com.

It is told how the alleged murderer said during his interrogation: "I don't understand why you are so overwrought over the murder of an entire family; it's not such a big deal in Russia."

Police believe the suspect was determined to avenge an insult to his honor, after he was fired from his job as head waiter at an Oshrenko-owned establishment.

Fraud Claims Fedor

Korea -- A local sambo leader has been indicted by South Korean prosecutors for fraud after allegedly --without rights -- having used the publicity rights of famous Russian MMA fighter Fedor Emelianenko, according to koreatimes.co.kr.

Good vs Bad Jujitsu Moves

Russia -- Themoscowtimes.com reports about Anna Loginova, a 29-year-old former model turned bodyguard.

The woman - by some called the most glamorous bodyguard in Russia - was tragically killed when she tried to stop a carjacker taking off in her Porsche Cayenne sports car in Moscow.

According to reports, she was instantly killed Sunday when she smashed her head against the pavement while holding on to the door handle as the carjacker sped off.

The same car had allegedly been targeted once before, something which might help explain the woman's attempt to fight back.

The former model told about the first incident in an interview with a Russian magazine, 'Maxim'.

"I used a jujitsu technique," she said. "I twisted his arm and elbowed him in the face. The guy obviously was not expecting such a reaction."

Well, I would say the first was a good move, while the second one - attempting to hold on to a speeding car - obviously was a very bad one.

Nutty Night-Time Ninja

"A Russian man, dressed as a Japanese ninja warrior, allegedly terrorized rural northern Italy with late-night robberies." And inspired by Robin Hood, no less. Now, this is really strange - even for a ninja :-)

The thief - emulating Japanese ninja - dressed all in black with a knife strapped to his leg and carrying a bow and arrows had been terrorizing farmers by smashing into their homes and demanding cash and valuables.

A suspect was arrested Monday night when an elderly farmer startled a thief by discharging a rifle. The alleged thief fled on a bicycle but was chased and caught by police in a nearby deserted farmhouse, a report said.

The suspect was identified as a former member of the Russian army. He apparently had his literature confused, as the suspect told police he modeled himself on Robin Hood, who rather than stealing from the poor, stole from the rich to give to the poor.

Confuse-Us speaks #10

Russian President Vladimir Putin likes to play karate (Japanese style of fighting). Belarusian "President" Aleksandr Lukashenko likes to play hockey. So, both of them are using very different means to resolve Russia-Belarus gas conflict.

This is according to americanchronicle.com

Sorry to be such a pain in the you know what part of the human anatomy, but Putin does judo, not karate.

Judging from the level of knowledge being demonstrated here - I wouldn't be too surprised if Lukashenko really likes to play the slide trombone. Same s***, right?

Judo politics?

The final round of the Judo European Club Championship will not be held in Tbilisi, the Georgian Judo Federation informed yesterday. The European Judo Union (EJU) sited the recent escalation of the political turmoil between Georgia and Russia and moved the tournament to Budapest, Hungary.

"This decision is final and it won't be altered. The members of the board have unanimously voted for it", the Judo European Federation president Marius Viser of Romania told the Georgian journalists.

The Georgian Judo Federation believes that Russia is behind the controversial decision.

Sumo fury

So much for the friendly giants of sumo...

Story:
The Russian sumo wrestler Roho faces a ban from Japan's ancient sport after throwing a temper tantrum in the wake of a defeat on Saturday.

Sunday's newspapers carried pictures of Roho in various stages of combustion after the red mist enveloped him in Nagoya.

Roho, nicknamed the "Russian bear", chased opponent Chiyotaikai into a bathroom after an explosive bout where both men broke several of sumo's strict rules of engagement.

Confuse-Us speaks #3

Karate or judo - close enough for the media I guess?
Oh well, I guess you can't expect more from people who call every kind of kick a "karate-kick", or anyone with a black belt "an expert".

Story:
Asked by the "Today" show's Matt Lauer about the recent caning Vice President Cheney gave him and Russia, President Vladimir Putin gave this cocky and cutting reply:
"I think these kinds of comments from your vice president amount to the same thing as an unfortunate shot while hunting."

Putin, a black belt in karate and the man into whose soul Bush famously saw five years ago, as he gazed into the eyes of that ex-KGB officer, takes no guff from these Americans.

Fine art

Police in Russia has seemingly a side business of bribery going. They have the art of "traffic violations" down to a fine art (pun intended).

Story:
If you've spent a reasonable amount of time on Russian roads, you know the routine when a traffic cop pulls you over for a moving violation: You either quietly slip bribe money into your documents before handing them over or opt to brave the paperwork and pay the fine.

Last Wednesday, a Belgian diplomat - a trade attache at the embassy - attacked a policeman and broke his nose after being pulled over for a traffic violation, police said.

The Belgian Embassy confirmed that one of its employees had been involved in an altercation and said he had suffered several bruises, had his glasses broken, and later discovered 5,000 rubles ($185) missing from his wallet, Interfax reported.

Police told Interfax that the diplomat left a restaurant Wednesday evening and committed several moving violations as he pulled away in his car. After he was stopped, he unexpectedly attacked two traffic police officers, police said.

Kommersant, citing a police source, reported that the diplomat had a black belt in karate.

Putin Goes to Shaolin

Trade and martial arts dominate second day of Putin's China visit:

Before leaving China, Putin headed to the Shaolin Temple for a taste of Buddhism and martial arts. Established about 1,500 years ago, Shaolin is famed for the great combination of martial arts skill and Zen.

The Chinese press had already begun speculating as to whether Putin, a black belt expert in judo, would challenge the Shaolin monks after watching their demonstration of Shaolin Kung Fu.
