Sanshou Athlete Died

China -- A 23-year-old Sanshou/wushu fighter, Shangguan Pengfei,has died in hospital, 42 days after he was knocked out during a competition in in Haikou, Hainan Province, according to english.cri.cn.

On October 31, the athlete was rushed to hospital after he collapsed following a blow to the head. The fighter remained in coma thereafter until he was declared dead on Monday, the paper says.

Questions have been raise how Shangguan could have passed the medical check given he had already been knocked out in the recent two months before the fatal competition.

Lost Match - Killed Herself

India -- Police said a 19-year-old female student, holding a "black-belt in martial arts" (duh), hanged herself after losing a karate match.

The tragic incident occurred at the young woman's home in Begum Bazaar, Hyderabad on Saturday evening, according to ibnlive.in.com.

Family members reportedly said the young woman was very depressed after she lost a karate fight during the annual sports competition at her college.

Karateka Died

India -- In what was called a tragic accident, a karate fighter from Jharkhand reportedly died minutes after winning the National Championship in Pune.

The black belt competitor allegedly complained of chest pain after a blow from an opponent during the competitions. Despite the injury, the victim went on to win the title, according to daily.bhaskar.com.

The fighter collapsed minutes after winning the tournament and died on the way to hospital.

Passing of a Legend

Holland -- After being ill for some time, the Dutch judo legend passed away at the age of 76 in his home town of Utrecht, according to rnw.nl.

Geesink shocked Japan as well as the judo world by being the first non-Japanese to beat their own title favorite - Akio Kaminga - at the Olympics in 1964. All though this was a huge blow to the Japanese, Geesink was revered there as a great judoka into his old age.

Charged With Murder

Nevada -- An MMA fighter from Gillette has now been formally charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of a former University of Nevada, Las Vegas football player.

Prosecutors charged the man, 25, in Las Vegas on Thursday, according to gillettenewsrecord.com.

Dies of Judo Injury

Japan -- A 12-year-old boy died in hospital on July 6 from a brain contusion which apparently was sustained during judo practice, according to mdn.mainichi.jp.

On June 27, the junior high school student from Kannami reportedly collapsed while taking part in practice at his judo club. Official said the boy is believed to have been struck in the head.

Martial Arts Fighter Died

South Carolina -- A 30-year-old MMA fighter from Gaston died from injuries sustained in a fight in Aiken Saturday, according to chronicle.augusta.com.

The man was pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m. at a medical center as a result of a brain hemorrhage, a coroner said.

The fight, held at an MMA event at the University of South Carolina Aiken's Convocation Center, was reportedly the man's first professional match.

Grand Master Confirmed Dead

Haiti -- 57-year-old taekwondo grand master Tran Trieu Quan from Quebec City in Canada has been confirmed dead, according to theglobeandmail.com. He went missing in the wake of the earthquake that hit in January.

His remains was identified in the rubble of a Port-au-Prince hotel, his family announced in a statement Saturday morning.

After General Choi died in 2002, Mr. Quan succeeded him as president of the International Taekwondo Federation, one of the sports' two main ruling bodies.
