False Drug Test Sample?

Nevada -- A complaint has been filed against MMA veteran Thiago Silva. The complaint alleges that the fighter's drug test sample from his battle with Brandon Vera on UFC 125 was inconsistent with human urine, according to bloodyelbow.com.

Silva has been suspended until an April 7 hearing in which he will be up for suspension and fine in accordance to the NSAC by-laws. NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer has stated that he will be asking the NSAC to overturn the UFC 125 decision against Brandon Vera to a no-contest.

Seniors Kicking Out

Here's a nice and inspirational article about 68-year-old Jimi Hadley from Oklahoma City who is in full swing doing taekwondo and kumdo (Korean kendo).

Apart from the utter rubbish of someone being graded second dan black belt (and apparently soon testing for third) after just four years or so of training, this is a good read. It shows that you do not necessarily need to start thinking about the couch even though you're considered a senior citizen.

This is one active and inspiring woman for sure!

Chopping the Pork Chops

China -- China's 27-year-old 2008 Olympic judo champion Tong Wen lost her 2009 world title and  was banned for two years after testing positive for Clenbuterol.

Now her coach, Wu Weifeng, has allegedly blamed a surfeit of pork chops for her positive test, according to nz.sports.yahoo.com.

Her coach believes that the well-documented food safety problems in China were responsible for the positive test.

The coach said that the judo star had been given lots of pork chops while preparing for the 2009 Championships in Holland. "She trained in Europe for a while and was sick of European food (...)," the coach said.

Not Your Typical Granny

California -- 69-year-old Marlene Williams is not your typical granny. She has attained what few people half her age have: a black belt in taekwondo.

The Old Agoura resident, mother of three and grandmother of two tied on her black belt in September after undergoing a rigorous testing process that was in no way modified due to her age, according to theacorn.com.

Although it was a proud moment, it was one she'd never really planned on. If, as a spectator at her grandson's tournament a few years ago, she were asked if she'd ever be the one donning a white uniform out on the mat, she'd have said no.

Black Belt, Broken Foot

California -- On September 27, 13-year-old Jessica Zermeno attained her black belt in taekwondo, according to thefridayflyer.com.

Yeah, yeah, blah, blah... I hear you. Another young girl with a black belt - big deal. And of course - under normal circumstances - I would tend to agree with you. However, this is not one of your run-of-the-mill junior "black belt farm" kind of deal - far from it.

This young fighter was born with an underdeveloped foot, leg and hip socket and one underdeveloped kidney. She had extreme abnormalities in the organs of her digestive system. Jessica has reportedly seen countless trips to the emergency room and numerous surgeries, including a kidney transplant in 1998.

And get this: After 6 years of training, she completed her more than 2 1/2 hours long black belt grading with a foot broken in three places!

I've got one word for you - respect.

Prison Kumite

I'm not quite sure what I think about teaching karate to prison inmates, something which is obviously being done in South Africa. What is your thought about this?

I'm not at all saying it's a bad or stupid thing - I just hope they know what they're doing. Under any circumstance it is at least a very interesting experiment...

Here in Norway a similar project was cut short not too long ago.

Story:
"We expect just over 80 inmates from the correctional centre facility to participate in the grading, said the deputy president of Karate South Africa. "It will be from white to brown belts."

"Karate is growing in leaps and bounds at many correctional centres facilities throughout the country, he added. "We appreciate the support from the authorities."

Age Is no Barrier

At the age of 68, Sheila Thurlow's recently passed the physical examination for the fourth Dan black belt in shotokan karate, according to newsshopper.co.uk

The examination was conducted by her son Kevin Thurlow and a panel of other senior instructors.

The veteran, who was tested at the English shotokan-ryu karate kyokai in Sidcup, has demonstrated age is no barrier and provides inspiration to other pensioners and even younger adults.

Her son Kevin, who recently was voted chairman of Britain's traditional governing body of karate, expressed his delight at her achievement.

The woman started training 20 years ago and claimed her first black belt at the age of 53.

She continues to train in both karate and kobudo at her son's dojo in Sidcup as well as teaching at her own dojo in Bexleyheath.

Impressive!

"The weaker sex", my furry behind; this is impressive!

Story:
South Carolina -- Cindy Gresko from Greenwood gave birth to her second son February 21, according to indexjournal.com. Naturally, in the three weeks since, she has done the normal things one is likely to do after giving birth: preparing baby bottles, getting up in the middle of the night and singing lullabies.

However, she has also delivered roundhouse kicks to the face... Saturday, she was one of several students who were tested to receive black belts in taekwondo.

The woman said she took a week off after her son's birth, then started slowly working on her techniques and forms for the test.

Fights for a Cause

South Africa -- Being diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth has not prevented Ryan Jeffery from leading a completely independent life and achieving his second Dan black belt in the demanding sport of Funakoshi karate.

Come Sunday, the 40-year-old will be grading for his third Dan black belt at Winklespruit, where he will undergo a series of rigorous tests and pit himself against other athletes.

Because of his illness, Jeffery had a loss of muscle control and balance on his right side, requiring him to find different ways of doing daily tasks, such as clipping his nails or unscrewing bottle caps.

Certain aspects of karate training were slightly modified to accommodate Jeffery's weakened right side, but he has been pushed as hard as any other able-bodied student.

Negative Positive Tests

According to the California State Athletic Commission, a MMA fighter has tested positive for Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite. The fighter in question is Phil Baroni, who was choked out by Frank Shamrock in the main event of the Strike Force/Elite XC pay-per-view on June 22.

The event took place in San Jose, and Baroni was not the only fighter on the card to fail a drug test, as Carter Williams tested positive for cocaine.

These suspensions come on the heels of MMA legend Royce Gracie's suspension. The Brazilian tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone. He reportedly had 25 times the normal limit of Nandrolone in his body.

Diaper Dan is Coming ...

So you think we are joking about this topic? I'm afraid it won't be long before the first toddler - or proud parents rather - claims "black belt, expert" status.

Story:
Meet the real karate kid. Two-year-old Isaac Hill has become the youngest person in Leicester to win a martial arts ranking.

Isaac is barely out of nappies but can already punch and karate kick his way around a class with children years older than him.

The pint-sized pupil has already moved from the beginners' white belt standard to the first grading of white belt with red stripe in just three months of training.
