Disability Claim While Going for Taekwondo Black Belt

I suppose claiming disability while at the same time being fit enough for black belt exams in taekwondo isn't the smartest of moves ... unless you want to have authorities on your back faster than you can say 'kick and punch'.

Case in point being this 40-year-old mother from the UK who claimed £18.000 over a period of five years during which time she reportedly became a second dan black belt in the martial art and also took part in competitions.

Accused: Top Karate Coach

Karate training - From Wikipedia.com
Here's another case of an alleged sexual assault case against a well known and respected karate coach, this time from Botswana.

Below, you will see parts of what thevoicebw.com has to say about the matter.

And by all means, let us be clear that being accused is not the same as a guilty sentence..
Police are investigating allegations against well-known karate instructor Andrew Dobolo, accused of sexually assaulting two young girls in his charge during last month's Botswana Games.
Dobolo, a Presidential award winner and viewed as one of the country's shining sports personalities, was the manager of the Gaborone karate team during the competition when the alleged incidents occurred.
Filing charges recently the girl's parents contented that on two separate occasions Dobolo lured the two girls aged 13 and 15 to his house where he sexually molested them.
So, what's your take on this? Does it appear that the number of cases is actually growing, or do you believe it's more a case of more cases being known to the public? Feel free to leave your comment below.

Closing Martial Arts Schools

When martial arts businesses are closing down with little or no warning, it puts a bad name on the martial arts community as a whole and students and parents alike are left in the dust.

What is even worse is that some of these closed schools is down to criminal activities of the operators, or quarrels and disagreements among instructors and owners - often times "political" issues over power, control or money.

The following two cases are recent examples:

South Dakota -- A Sioux Falls martial arts school abruptly closed its doors Monday morning. Now, the owner of the school and parents of students taking lessons are accusing each other of wrongdoing.

Each side says the other took money and failed to live up to various obligations. And it's the kids who are being caught in the middle of a very different kind of fight.

The first word many parents of those students received about this dispute was notice during the school day that the vehicle that normally picks up their children to take them to classes wouldn't be showing up.

The Elite Martial Arts Academy was officially formed on August 1. Back in April, when it was called the Sioux Falls Martial Arts Academy, owner Tom Werner asked for $35 membership fees for students to join USA Taekwondo.

That membership allows kids to travel to national competitions. But according to former instructors, as well as some parents, those applications haven't been processed more than five months later.

----

South Carolina -- When a Boiling Springs mom went to drop off her children at a popular martial arts business last Thursday she found a sign on the door that said "no more classes."

The woman (...) says she paid $1,132 to All-American Martial Arts Center in Boiling Springs on August 31. The money was paid as a six-month advance, but she says her children received only two and a half weeks of classes before the place closed.

The woman says another mother at the facility told her, "The owner's been arrested, and they're closing, and I said wait a minute. I just paid for six months! ... I paid in full.

Spartanburg County deputies did arrest (the owner) on August 16 and charged him with 2nd degree burglary, petite larceny and obtaining goods under false pretenses. Deputies say (the owner) stole jewelry from the home of one of his clients and later pawned it.

What's your take on situations like this? Any experiences about martial arts businesses closing down you care to share with the rest of us? Feel free to comment below!

Taekwondon't

Update, August 27:
The 16-year-old boy from Florida has been sentenced and ordered to serve up to eight months at a youth correctional institution following the assault at a local martial arts competition.

Update, July 7:
It was originally thought the fight broke out prior to a match. However, it has emerged that there was no "fight", but an outright assault - and that it happened after a bout.

The attacker, who just prior to the incident had lost his match, went over to the winner and delivered a vicious kick to the head of the totally unprepared victim.

A witness said that neither the assailant, nor his father, seemed to have any remorse (why am I not surprised...)

As a result of the violent fight, one of the boys were arrested and the other was taken to a medical center, a police spokesman said.

Shameful and stupid behavior if you ask me.

Fee "Hikeido"

Australia -- Following a fee increase imposed on Melbourne University sports clubs, the kung fu club has reportedly accused the campus sports association of racism and lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, according to watoday.com.au.

The University Sport claim the increase it was unavoidable due to a revenue shortfall caused by a government ban on collecting union fees from students.

Kung Fu Club students says the clubs most affected are international students - predominantly Asian - who are being shut out of campus sports following the fee hike.

According to policies, a club which is not competing must pay a per-hour room hire fee. On the other hand, free training space is provided free to the clubs which are preparing for competition.

The complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission allegedly includes a support statement from other campus martial arts units, including the aikido and karate clubs.

Blind Won Taekwondo Gold

Croatia -- A man who became blind after a 1998 accident took the top spot at a taekwondo competition in Zagreb, according to croatiantimes.com.

"Yeah, yeah ... big deal, so he won a sparring match", some folks may perhaps be tempted to think. Well, let me assure you it IS a big deal as it appears the 36-year-old Mirsad Becirovic was the only competitor with a disability!

If that is not impressive to you, then I seriously don't know what might be.

A Martial Arts Maniac

UK -- A 20-year-old man, tagged a "martial arts maniac" (and for obvious reasons it seems) has been sentenced to seven and half years in jail for two sickening attacks.

The full-blown idiot left a party-goer with serious brain injuries when he delivered a kick to the head which prosecutors proclaimed "Jean Claude Van Damme would have been proud of."

While on bail for this attack, the sneering moron then stabbed a man twice after being kicked out of a martial arts competition.

While the judge at the Newcastle Crown Court trial outlined the injuries he inflicted, the young low-life was reportedly laughing and and smiling.

It is indeed reports like this from chroniclelive.co.uk which at times makes me deeply ashamed to belong to the martial arts fraternity.

Judo Coach Resigned

Singapore -- A school's judo coach has resigned following some rather dramatic scenes that unfolded at the Schools National Judo Championships recently, according to news.asiaone.com.

The 57-year-old man had to be restrained by onlookers when he confronted the convener of the tournament, to protest the disqualification of one of his young fighters.

The coach had also reportedly ordered his five-man team to stage a sit-down protest on the competition mat.

Indeed, another shining role model - a great example of control, discipline, budo spirit and sportsmanship :-)

En Guarde!

It was reported that one in 20 participants among the fighters at the taekwondo world championships held in Denmark, required hospital admission. The injuries were described as concussion, fractures of the cheekbone and jaw, facial contusion and lacerations.

Control anyone...? Or is this what you can expect when you dance around with your "guard" dangling around your waist?

Sick Leave, Sort of

Australia -- A school teacher and taekwondo competitor was reportedly given nine days off work for knee surgery, according to heraldsun.com.au.

The only "operation" taking place, was the man actually travelling thousands of kilometres away to a taekwondo competition in Canada.

A disciplinary hearing was told how the former state champion was caught out when his school discovered the teacher in an Australian team photo for the event.

Asked why he lied, the man said: "Because I just wanted to represent Australia so badly."

TKD Hijab Allowed

The governing body of WTF has overturned its decision from 2007 to ban female competitors wearing a traditional hijab under their headgear.

The taekwondo federation said it hopes this decision will help the sport promote gender equality at the upcoming world championships.

The 2007 ruling led to the exclusion of many Muslim women from WTF tournaments. "We believe that our respect for others' cultures and beliefs will allow taekwondo to enhance its status as an Olympic sport," said the chairman of the federation's technical committee.

She'll Get Her Medal

In 1959, 24-year-old "Rusty" Kanokogi (then Rena Glickman) had to disguise herself as a man in order to compete. At the time it was not allowed for women to compete in judo leagues.

Together with her team, she won a gold medal in the YMCA state judo (N.Y.) championships. However, the judges later revoked her medal.

Now, at the age of 74 and probably America's highest ranking woman in the sport, she will finally receive the gold medal she won 50 years ago.

Kanokogi is a pioneer in women's judo. Her accomplishments include lobbying the IOC to recognize women's judo as an Olympic sport.
