Georgia -- At approximately 9:30 pm, University of West Georgia sophomore David Calhoun was on the lawn waiting for friends when he was approached from behind by a male who demanded his wallet. The male had a large straight-edged knife, and upon turning to see the armed robber, Calhoun jumped back and pulled his own knife. Calhoun then claims that the male lunged at him with his knife, yet the knife got caught in Calhoun's jacket. Calhoun suffered only a small cut on his arm. Calhoun then kicked the male, causing him to fall on the ground.
"I decided it was best to get away then" Calhoun said. He quickly ran inside the Fish House, where others inside called the police.
Calhoun credits much of his safety to his past experience with karate, and highly recommends self-defense courses: "It is always advisable to take self-defense courses. Also, travel in larger numbers, and always use your better judgment."
